Aside from being a genius composer and virtuoso pianist since the 1950s, Maestro Palmieri has always been at the top of my admiration list for his social activism. Now he’s at it again supporting urgent grassroots community organizations right here in Oakland! Joined by maestro Orestes Vilato, this will be a musical moment not to be missed! Needless to say, this will be a HIGH HONOR for me.
Thank you for helping spread the word - js

This will be an afternoon of music and culture to support immigrant justice. Dolores Street Community Services and their allies extend their solidarity to organizations like No More Deaths, a Tucson-based group, dedicated to stopping the death and suffering
faced by migrants along the US/Mexico border. In an effort to increase public awareness about the human rights crisis unfolding at the border and raise monetary
support, these three artists join a once-in-a-lifetime bill to assist those engaged (from Arizona to the Bay) in the historic struggle for immigrant rights and social justice.

Percussionist/bandleader Benny Velarde is the true godfather of Latin Jazz and Salsa in the San Francisco Bay Area. Born on September 6th, 1929 in Panama City, Panama, he came to San Francisco in 1945 and attended Mission High School and City College of San Francisco. As an original touring and recording member of Cal Tjader’s first Quintet (1953), one of the first radio programmers to consistently play the hippest recordings from his own collection on the air, and a steady Bay Area bandleader from the end of the 50s up to now, NOBODY has done as much for our local scene than Benny. Everyone with a long history around here either came through his group at some point, learned from him directly, or from someone else who learned from him. He is a true pioneer, a trailblazer, and mentor to countless musicians from several generations in the Bay Area. Benny may have been the first to incorporate the timbales into a local band when he did it with Cal Tjader in 1953. His performing and recording credits are a who’s who of Jazz and Latin music. In addition to the highly influential Cal Tjader Quintet, Benny has played with Mongo Santamaria, Joe Henderson, Errol Garner, Stan Getz, Luis Gasca, Vince Guaraldi, Lalo Schifrin, Hadley Caliman, Toña La Negra, Elsa Aguirre, Walter Wanderly, Sal Guerrero, Merced Gallegos and Ethel Smith. Benny will be honored on this date with the SFJAZZ Beacon Award for lifetime achievement, while leading his All-Star band through some rousing Salsa and Latin Jazz.

The Creole nature of Latin jazz, and Caribbean culture in general, are in many ways templates for diversity, respect, and understanding for the entire planet. It tells an urgent story that is a beautiful testament to human perseverance, but it is not a pretty story. Genocide, slavery, apartheid, and continued colonial mentality are the results of the American experiment and clash of cultures. Identities lost and found also epitomize American history and are the basis of great turmoil and passion to the individual and collective mindset.
The Western “love boat” view of the Caribbean as little more than a vacation destination deters acknowledgement of the economic and human needs of the region, as well as its central role in American history. In this hostile environment, the seemingly simple acts of studying, playing, and preserving jazz and Latin jazz are themselves acts of resistance. This lecture is based on the music of the Spanish-speaking Antilles-music that documents and embodies the American saga as well as any.

Cuban songs and chants of Afro/spiritual origin are at the root of contemporary Salsa and Latin Jazz and continue to be a strong base of identity for many Caribbean descendants in and out of the region. We will also learn the melodies, phrasing and significance of several cantos of Kongo and Yoruba (Nigeria) origin still used in modern syncretization of African-based spiritual practice in Cuba and other places.

Jovino Santos Neto is a 3-time Latin Grammy Nominee (http://www.jovisan.net/) and we have him here from Seattle for one, very special night of music, wine, prizes and hors d’oeuvres.
Jovino, who is originally from Brazil, is currently living in Seattle where he teaches and records. He has multiple CDs and has collaborated with musicians such as Hermeto Pascoal, Bill Frisell, Paquito d’Rivera, David Sanchez, Joe Locke and many more.
Come and see what other surprise guest artists will drop in!!!
Proceeds go to Rhythmic Concepts Inc (RCI), a Bay Area non-profit dedicated to the preservation of the Jazz art form through education and awareness. This special night will raise money for two of RCI’s programs Jam Camp and the Oakland Children’s Community Choir. These two programs give children the opportunity to participate in various music programs where funding has eliminated music programs. Your donation will go a long way to providing underprivileged Oakland youth an opportunity to learn and perform music.

The John Santos Sextet, Machina Sol, DJ Jose Ruiz, and more to raise funds for Maiti’s medical studies in Cuba.
MAITI”S NOTE . . .
Dear Friend,
My name is Maiti Celina Rodriguez. I am currently a third year Medical Student at the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana, Cuba (LASM). I am a second generation Chicana, born and raised in Oakland, CA, and was afforded the amazing opportunity to study medicine for free on a tuition scholarship provided by the government of the island country of Cuba.
LASM was established in 1999 by the Cuban government and in 2001 the school was opened to U. S. students thanks to the work of the Congressional Black Caucus. The six-year program provides students worldwide free medical schooling. There are currently 133 students from the U.S. attending LASM from the pre-med to 6th year of medicine. Upon graduation, students return to their home countries to practice medicine in underserved communities.
The past three years at LASM have provided me with a vital and unique learning experience few have the opportunity to encounter as a medical student. Unfortunately, due to diplomatic relations between Cuba and the US at this time, students from the program are ineligible for any federal student loan programs and the tuition scholarship does not cover the additional costs of living including basic costs of transportation, airfare (1-2 trips home per year), books, internal travel, internet, phone and food costs. Expenses are estimated at $3,000 annually and an estimated $12,000 over the next 4 years in addition to approximately $5,000 for the board exams and preparatory courses.
With the support and inspiration of my family and friends I am determined to realize my dream of becoming a Pediatrician or a Primary Care Physician. I am organizing a fundraising event this summer in hopes of raising money that I will use throughout my remaining four years of medical school and will possibly lessen the financial burden that my schooling has placed on my family. The fundraising event “Make a Difference” is going to take place on Sunday, August 29th from 1-5pm at the Eastside Arts Alliance in Oakland. Please see the attached flyer.
At the event there will be musical entertainment by The John Santos Quintet, Machina Sol Band and DJ Jose Ruiz, as well as a silent auction including various items, donated by the community, up for bid. I will also give a short interactive presentation about my program and my experience during these first 2 ½ years which will include a slide show and additionally; I will offer ways that guests can find out more about the LASM program.
I would like to invite you to come to this event and if not, send money. Please know that your contribution to this event is an opportunity for you to “make a difference” in my medical school experience. Your contribution is an investment in my success as a doctor and helps me realize my dream of “making a difference” in the lives of my patients. I look forward to seeing you at my event.
If you are unable to attend the fundraising event on August 29th and you would still be interested in donating, you can donate frequent flyer miles or using PayPal or send a check to Maiti Celina Rodriguez and mail it to:
